Inspire Theatre continues its smash 19th season with the comedy thriller “Deathtrap” by Ira Levin. Broadway’s longest-running mystery, “Deathtrap” is a classic pulse-pounding whodunit with devilishly wicked characters, multiple twists, and plenty of laughs. Time Magazine said, “If you care to assassinate yourself with laughter, try ‘Deathtrap.’”
Nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play, it ran for over 1800 performances on Broadway, became a movie in 1982 starring Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve, and has been produced all over the world.
“Deathtrap” is about Sidney Bruhl, a once-successful writer of Broadway mysteries, who is struggling to overcome an eighteen-year “dry” spell. A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student in the seminar he has been conducting, which Sidney recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway hit. Sidney’s plan, which he devises with his wife Myra’s help, is to offer collaboration to the student, an idea which the younger man quickly accepts. Throw in an eccentric psychic and a stuffy lawyer, and the play begins to soar with an abundance of shocking surprises, thrills, and laughter. This dark, comedic cliffhanger will have audiences laughing one moment and screaming in terror the next as Sidney discovers he may not be the only murderer in the room. (This show contains violence and limited use of strong language.)
Director Len Fisher says, “‘Deathtrap’ is probably the finest example of the two-act mystery you’ll ever see. It has more twists, turns, and sudden shocks than probably any play around and will leave you guessing. That, and the fact that it’s the perfect blend of suspense, chills, and humor, make this play a terrific evening of theatre.”
“Deathtrap” stars some of the area’s best actors. The talented Chris Martin stars as Sidney. Martin is returning to the Inspire stage after a seventeen-year absence. The young playwright, Clifford, will be played by Tristan Seaver, a gifted actor who is new to Inspire but not to the stage. Returning actress Deanna Lee fills the role of Myra, Sidney’s long-suffering wife, while Bailey Hansen and Mark Sopchak portray the eccentric Dutch psychic Helga ten Dorp and the family attorney, respectively.
